Newborn: #6 needles, sport weight yarn
1 year: #8 needles, worsted weight yarn

* Body knit back and forth on circular needle, straights used when separate for front and back, sleeves can be knit with double pointed needles to avoid seaming.


Using circular needle cast on 100 stitches with red. Knit 3 ridges (6 rows). Next row, join white and knit 2, yarn over, knit 2 together for buttonhole. Knit across. Knit back with white. Knit next two rows red. Continue alternating 2 rows white with two rows red through out. At the same time, repeat the buttonhole row every 6 ridges. Work 28 ridges to armhole.

Right Front
Next row: Knit 27 for right front. Leave the remaining stitches on the circular needle. Work back and forth using the straights until2 ridges after the 7th buttonhole. Next row: bind off 12 stitches for neck opening. Work remaining 12 stitches for 12 more ridges. Place stitches on a holder if using 3-needle bind off or bind off. If using 3-needle bind off, cut yarn leaving a 2-yard tail.

Left front
Pick up 27 stitches with front facing for left front. Work as for right, reversing shaping for neck and leaving out buttonholes.

Knit remaining 46 stitches for 12 rows. For 3-needle bind off, place right front and back right sides together and bind off 12 stitches, bind off the next 22 stitches for neck back, and bind off remaining 12 stitches with left front.

Cast on 48 stitches. Knit 3 ridges in stripe pattern. Next row: knit 1, knit 2 together, knit to last 3 stitches, knit 2 tog, knit 1. Continue knitting, repeating decrease row every 4 ridges 4 more times (38 st). Knit one more ridge in same color then bind off.

Sleeves can also be worked on dps by picking up 48 stitches around armhole and working one row knit, one row purl for garter stitch.

Sew sleeve seams and sew in place. Sew on buttons.
